Keeping a tarot journal

A tarot journal is a record of what you asked, what you pulled, and what actually happened afterwards. That last part is the one everyone skips and the only one that teaches you anything. Write four lines per reading: the question, the cards, your first reaction, and one week later what turned out to be true.

Four lines is enough

Long entries stop within a month. Four lines survive for years, and years is where the value is. Nobody ever learned tarot from one beautiful entry.

Write your reaction, not the book

You can look up the meaning any time. What you cannot get back is what you felt when the card turned. That is the part that becomes your own reading style.

Come back after a week

This is the whole method. A week later, read the entry and write one line about what actually happened. Do it ten times and you will start to see which cards you consistently read too kindly, and which ones you dread for no reason.

Let the patterns find you

After a few dozen entries the same card starts returning. That repetition is the real message, and it takes longer than one reading to say itself. Your journal is where a practice becomes memory.

Your journal stays on your own device. Nothing you write here travels anywhere unless you choose to send it.

What to remember

  • Four lines per reading. Long entries do not survive.
  • The week-later line is the one that teaches you.
  • Repeating cards are a message that needs months to finish.

Try it now

Open your journal and add one line to your most recent reading: what has actually happened since.

Common questions

What should I write in a tarot journal?

Four things: the question you asked, the cards you pulled, your first reaction before looking anything up, and one line a week later about what actually happened. The fourth is the one that teaches you to read.

Does keeping a tarot journal actually help?

It is the fastest way to learn. Memory rewrites readings to match what happened, so only a written record shows you which cards you misread and which ones keep returning across months.

How often should I do a tarot reading?

One card a day and one full spread a week is a sustainable rhythm. Reading several times a day usually means you are looking for a different answer rather than practising, and it makes the journal harder to learn from.
