Numerology
Numerology reads a person, a date or a number you keep seeing by adding its digits until one digit is left, and then asking what that digit is for. One is the first step. Nine is the ending. Everything between them is a way of moving through a life. It is an old way of thinking, older than the tarot, and it lasts because a single number is easy to carry with you all week.
How numerology works
The arithmetic is the easy part. You take a number, add its digits, and keep adding until one digit is left. A birthday of 24 becomes 2 plus 4, which is 6. A year of 1990 becomes 19, then 10, then 1. Two results are kept whole instead of reduced: 11 and 22, and by most modern counts 33 as well. Those are the master numbers, and each is read as a louder, more demanding version of the digit it would reduce to.
What the digits mean has been steady for a very long time. Pythagoras and the school around him treated numbers as qualities rather than amounts: odd and active, even and receptive, the triangle that closes a shape, the square that holds up a house. Tarot picked up the same order centuries later, which is why the first card is a beginning and the ninth is a person alone on a mountain with a lantern. When a reading tells you a 4 wants structure, it is saying what the Emperor's stone throne says, in fewer words.
Where numerology earns its place is attention. A number hands you one thing to watch for a week instead of a full description of your personality. If you know your life path is a 2, you catch the moment you say yes when you meant no. If 555 keeps turning up, you notice how much of your day goes into planning a change you have not started. The number does no work for you. It points at where the work is.

What are the master numbers 11, 22 and 33?
They are the three double digits that are never reduced. Each one carries the digit it would reduce to and asks more of it: 11 is a 2 with its intuition turned up, 22 is a 4 that builds on a bigger scale, 33 is a 6 that cares for more people than one household. They are not better numbers, only heavier ones.
Is numerology the same thing as astrology?
No. Astrology reads where the planets were; numerology reads what your date adds up to.
