How to read a birth chart
Read a birth chart in five passes. First your Sun, Moon and rising. Second the balance of elements, which tells you the temperature of the whole chart. Third where each planet sits by sign and house. Fourth the aspects, meaning which planets are talking to each other. Fifth, and only fifth, the details. Most people drown because they start at step five.
Pass one: the big three
Sun, Moon and rising, in one sentence. If you can only ever read three things in a chart, read these. They give you eighty percent of what a chart is going to say.
Pass two: the temperature
Count how many planets sit in fire, earth, air and water. A chart heavy in fire runs hot and fast. Heavy in earth, slow and solid. Heavy in air, up in thought. Heavy in water, deep in feeling.
The missing element matters too. It is usually the one you spend a lifetime learning, often through the people who carry it easily.
Pass three: sign and house
Take each planet and say two things about it. The sign is how it behaves. The house is where in your life it behaves that way. Two sentences per planet is plenty.
Pass four: what is talking to what
Aspects are the angles between planets, and they are simply relationships. Some planets in your chart get along. Some argue. The arguments are usually the interesting part, because that is where a life actually happens.
Hold it as a mirror
A chart is not a verdict. It describes weather and tendency, not an ending. Take what resonates, sit with what stings, and leave the rest on the page.
