The twelve houses

The twelve houses divide your chart into twelve areas of life. The first is you and your body. The fourth is home and family. The seventh is partnership. The tenth is work and public life. A planet's sign tells you how it behaves; its house tells you where in your life you will meet it.

The four corners hold the map

Learn four houses and you can read a chart. The first is how you show up. The fourth is where you come from. The seventh is who you meet. The tenth is what you build in public.

They sit opposite each other in two pairs. Self and other. Home and work. Most of a life happens along those two lines.

The other eight, in one line each

Second: money and what you value. Third: talking, siblings, short trips. Fifth: play, romance, making things. Sixth: daily work and health.

Eighth: what is shared, and what ends. Ninth: study, travel, belief. Eleventh: friends and the future. Twelfth: rest, solitude and what you keep hidden.

Empty houses are not empty lives

Only ten planets have to fill twelve houses, so most charts have empty ones. An empty seventh house does not mean you will not partner. It means that area runs quietly, without a planet insisting on it.

Houses need a birth time

The whole house system rotates with the clock. An hour of error can move a planet into a different room of your life, so an unknown birth time means the houses stay quiet. That is the honest answer, and it costs you nothing: your planets and signs are unchanged.

What to remember

  • Sign is how. House is where in your life.
  • First, fourth, seventh and tenth carry most of the map.
  • Empty houses are normal. Ten planets cannot fill twelve rooms.

Common questions

What do the 12 houses mean in astrology?

Each house is an area of life. First is self, second money, third communication, fourth home, fifth play and romance, sixth daily work and health, seventh partnership, eighth what is shared and what ends, ninth study and belief, tenth public work, eleventh friends, twelfth rest and solitude.

What does an empty house mean in a birth chart?

Nothing is missing. There are ten planets and twelve houses, so empty houses are normal and most charts have several. That area of life simply runs without a planet drawing constant attention to it.

What is the difference between a sign and a house?

A sign describes how a planet behaves. A house describes where in your life you meet that behaviour. Mars in Aries is a certain kind of drive; Mars in the tenth house is where that drive shows up, which is your work and public life.
