A red heart floats against a gray sky, pierced clean through by three swords, while rain falls behind it. There are no people in the card: the wound is shown without its story, because everyone who draws it already knows their own. The rain matters. Rain is how a sky finishes grieving.

Three of Swords upright

Upright, the Three of Swords is the card of the clean wound. Something pierced the heart, a betrayal, a goodbye, a sentence you cannot unhear, and the card refuses to pretend otherwise. Its gift is precision: three swords, not thirty; this hurt has edges, a shape, a name, and what has a name can heal. Notice what the image leaves out, there is no person in it, because the card is the pain itself, not a verdict on your future. The rain behind the heart is already falling, and rain is how grief moves through. Let it. Cry the real amount. What is forbidden to hurt is what never finishes hurting.

Three of Swords reversed

The swords are being drawn out. Reversed, it names the slow healing of an old pierce, or pain kept alive by replaying it. Forgiveness is for your own chest.

Reversed, the Three of Swords is the wound past its date. Either it is finally releasing, the swords loosening, forgiveness becoming imaginable, the story told without your voice breaking, or it is being kept in place artificially: the hurt replayed nightly, the account reread, the pain converted into an identity because at least an identity is something. Ask which sword you could remove this month. Not all three; one. Reversed, this card also warns against the silent treatment of your own grief, mourning postponed becomes mourning distributed, leaking into everything. Better one honest storm than a year of drizzle.

In love, the Three of Swords is the pierced heart under the rain: three swords, grey clouds, no person in the picture. It speaks of a betrayal, of a breakup, of a sentence that hurt more than any act. The card softens nothing. It says the wound is real, and that the rain, in time, also washes.
