Temperance
The middle path is not the boring one, it's the alchemical one. Temperance blends opposites into something better than either. Patience, moderation, one careful pour at a time.

What the card shows
An angel with open wings pours water between two cups, and the stream bends in a way water should not. One foot rests on land, the other in the water: both worlds at once, neither abandoned. A path runs back toward mountains where a crown of light waits. The card shows mixing as an art: the right amounts, at the right pace, until something new exists.
Temperance upright
Upright, Temperance gathers its themes into one current: balance, blending, healing. As a middle Major Arcana, it belongs to the deck's chapters of testing: the forces here change you rather than simply visit you. Read it as a chapter heading: the current around you is larger than the day.
Temperance reversed
Excess somewhere, drought somewhere else. Reversed, Temperance points to a life out of proportion, too much of one thing standing in for enough of everything.
Reversed, Temperance keeps its subject and loses its flow: balance is still the theme, now blocked, delayed or turned inward. A reversed middle Major means the test is being postponed or repeated: what this card asks does not expire, it compounds. A Major Arcana unblocks when you stop managing it and start listening to it: ask what this chapter wants from you, not how to end it.
How to read a reversed card →Temperance in love
Temperance tests a bond rather than describing it, and the test is about balance. In love, a Major Arcana marks a chapter of the heart, larger than any single conversation.
Reversed
Reversed in love, Temperance marks a chapter resisted: balance is asking to transform the bond, and one of you is negotiating with the door.
Temperance at work
Temperance asks working life a question it cannot dodge, and the question is balance. At work, a Major Arcana signals a turning of the road itself, not just the next task.
Reversed
Reversed at work, Temperance means the road itself is questioned: balance is no longer about the next task but about whether this path is still yours.
Temperance and money
Temperance tests what you believe security is, using balance to do it. Around money, a Major Arcana speaks of your deeper pattern with security itself.
Reversed
Reversed around money, Temperance points below the balance: balance is your old pattern with security running the show. The account is fine or it is not, but the pattern is the story.
Is Temperance a yes or a no?
Temperance answers yes. The balance it carries moves your question forward, so treat the door as open and walk through it while it is.
Health and energy
In matters of body and energy, Temperance marks a season rather than a symptom: the whole rhythm of life is asking for adjustment around balance. Listen to the season, not only to the day.
In spirit
As a spiritual matter, Temperance is a threshold: balance is not a topic here but an initiation, and thresholds are crossed by consenting to them. Step through slowly and awake.
Number and correspondence
Temperance carries the number 14 of the Major Arcana. In numerology it reduces to 5, the number of friction, the hard middle where change actually happens.
In the deck's old correspondences, Temperance belongs to Sagittarius.
Temperance beside other cards
- The Chariot
Temperance and The Chariot mirror each other from opposite ends of the major arc: balance at one end, drive at the other. Together they ask you to read your situation as one story with two ends.
- The Devil
After Temperance comes The Devil in the major arc: what balance opens, attachment carries on. Drawn together they show the current chapter and the one already calling.
- Ace of Wands
The Ace of Wands is Temperance at street level: the same current at a size you can act on this week. The big card gives the theme; the ace gives the first step.
Temperance as feelings
As a feeling, Temperance is a big feeling, a whole season of the heart: balance, blending, healing.
Temperance as advice
Temperance's advice: do not rush this chapter; move with it. The middle path is not the boring one, it's the alchemical one.
