What the card shows
A skeleton in black armor rides a white horse, carrying a black banner with a white rose. A king lies fallen; a bishop, a woman and a child face the rider in their own ways. In the distance, between two towers, the sun is rising, not setting. The picture says what the card means: something ends so the light can come up somewhere new.
Death upright
Upright, Death is the deck's most misread card and its most reliable one. It almost never means a death; it means an ending that is already underway, a role, a relationship's old shape, a self-image, a season of life that has finished making sense. What frightens people in this card is usually relief they have not given themselves permission to feel. Look at the image: the sun is rising between the towers, not setting. Drawn today, Death asks you to stop administering life support to something that has already let go of you. Grief is allowed. Resurrection of the old form is not.
Death reversed
The ending is overdue and you know it. Reversed, Death names the change resisted, the job, the pattern, the tie kept on life support. What's done is done; unplug it.
Reversed, Death is the ending refused, and the price of the refusal. The job that ended months ago except on paper. The relationship kept alive in a shape that suits neither of you. The version of yourself you keep performing because the people around you ordered it years ago. Resisting this card does not prevent the ending; it only moves the cost, from one clean grief into a long tax paid daily. Reversed, it asks one brave question: what would you have to feel if you finally let this finish? That feeling is the door. Everything on the other side of it is lighter than this.
