What the card shows
A young traveler steps toward the edge of a cliff, face lifted to the sky, a small bundle on a stick over one shoulder. A white rose hangs loosely in the other hand: innocence carried lightly, not gripped. A little white dog leaps at his heels, the instinct that warns and celebrates at once. The sun shines full above the mountains. Nothing in the picture is looking down.
The Fool upright
Upright, the Fool is permission. Whatever you have been circling, the card says the circling is over: take the step at the size you can actually take it. It does not promise the leap will work. It promises something quieter and more useful, that you are more ready than you feel, and that readiness was never going to arrive first. The Fool tends to appear before journeys, first messages, new jobs, new cities and new loves, anywhere the first move has been waiting on courage. Keep the bundle small. Bring the dog, your instinct. Leave the map you do not have.
The Fool reversed
The leap is real, but so is the cliff. Reversed, the Fool asks whether you're avoiding a beginning out of fear, or rushing into one to avoid looking down.
Reversed, the Fool splits into two warnings and only you know which one is yours. The first is recklessness: a leap taken to escape something rather than to reach something, the cliff used as an exit. The second is paralysis dressed as prudence: research that never ends, plans that grow instead of shrinking, a beginning postponed so long it quietly became a refusal. Ask one question to tell them apart: does the step scare you because it is wrong, or because it is real? Fear of wrongness deserves a pause. Fear of realness deserves a date on the calendar.
